Salpholda Hockey League; Exchequers Edge Police
In a heated clash under the floodlights at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, Exchequers secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Police in their second outing of the 2025 Salpholda Hockey League.
Heading into the game, Exchequers sat third on the table with three points, trailing the undefeated Police side, who had six from two wins. But the Bank of Ghana men wasted no time making a statement. Within two minutes, Benjamin Kwofie broke the deadlock with a well-angled field goal, sending early shockwaves through the Police defense.
Their intensity didn’t stop there. Exchequers earned a penalty corner shortly after, and a well-rehearsed routine saw Ebenezer Nortey's push meet Kofi Okyere Quagraine’s stick for a second goal in the 5th minute. By the end of the first quarter, the bankers were up 2-0, a scoreline that held steady through halftime.
However, the game shifted in the third quarter. Exchequers began to lose grip, fumbling possession—even from their own half—and allowing Police to mount pressure. A lapse in defense handed Police a penalty corner, and Osman Abubakar made no mistake, reducing the deficit.
Despite Police’s dominant second-half performance, they failed to find an equalizer. Exchequers dug deep to defend their lead and walked away 2-1 winners.
Post-match reactions:
Head Coach Richard Attipoe acknowledged the shift in momentum; "We played well in the first and second quarters. In the third and fourth, my guys just switched off. But it’s the win we wanted. We took our chances early on. Clearly, Police have better match fitness, and that showed. But we’ll correct our mistakes and build up our match conditioning game by game.”
Team captain Bempah remained optimistic; “I’m still excited. We came for the three points, and we got them. We’re not leaving any stone unturned—we’re in this to win every match. Our focus now is on the next game.”
Exchequers take on Legonknights Men on June 14th, aiming to build momentum and stay in the title chase.
