Traders at Madina in the La Nkwantanang Municipality of the Greater Accra Region have descended heavily on the Minister for Inner-City and Zongo Development, Boniface Abubakar Siddique, saying he has failed to address the plights of Zongo communities.
Their outbursts follow an attempt to relocate them from their former business hub along the Madina –Adenta highway to a new location behind Madina Tema station.
“We are seriously peeved at the manner in which they are frustrating us with this relocation. We won’t sit there for Boniface and his family to enjoy, while we suffer here.
“We are the same people who voted him and the NPP into power; if they don’t make life better for us, we will vote them out,†a trader who gave her name as Nana Kalypo fumed.
They took issue with the council members entrusted with the process for rendering them idle due to their ineptitude.
According to the traders who spoke with Asempanew.com, the relocation has stalled due to a number of factors, as some Nigerian traders are suspected to grease the palms of authorities to enable them secure better locations at the new market.
Affected traders claimed they were informed to move last week Friday but have not been settled after days, though they have cooperated with authorities all along.
“We were told to move to this new location but we later got wind of some bribery going on among council members and Nigerian traders.
“We are telling government to intervene and ensure that we are settled otherwise we will vote them out just as we voted them into power.
“Most of us are mothers who are catering for our wards in schools, so this hitch which has rendered us idle is affecting us. We have limited time to pay off loans and need to work so government and the appropriate authorities should come to our aid as we are suffering,†another trader lamented.
