Youth forced to pay GHc6,000 to get into army, police under Akufo-Addo – Buah

Young people who wish to get recruited into the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces under the Akufo-Addo administration, are being made to pay GHS6,000 to gain entry, Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah has alleged.

“When did we even believe that it will come to pass that young Ghanaians will be paying money, GHS6,000 to go to the army? And now, it’s a public secret. How many young people from my district have come to me with documents that they have to pay GHS6,000 to be able to be recruited into the NPP military, NPP police force”.

“This is the government that has really shown us the things that we couldn’t even imagine and that’s why this election is about the rescue of Ghana”, the former Minister of Energy said.

The opposition MP made the claim when he was refuting allegations by fellow MP Collins Owusu Amankwah, the Vice-Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, on Tuesday, 3 November 2020, to the effect that the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) was planning to block roads in swing regions on the day of elections.

According to Mr Buah, the NPP is rather known for such violent plots and deterioration in the country’s security apparatus.

“In fact, he’s part of the leadership of parliament and you have to be very worried that a leader in the house will come and call you, this media, without any evidence; you asked him and he said he has intelligence. I don’t know whether he works with the BNI, and the guy just stands here and the guy just talks.

“I think he was talking about the NPP, that’s exactly what he was doing. The NPP is the one that is in power, that has the power of the state that controls the military, the police; it is the record of the NPP that has trained vigilante forces; in fact, it is the NPP who has refused to disband the vigilante forces; you remember when the Peace Council was calling on political parties, the NDC went and committed to peace. It’s the NPP that has refused to do so”, he said.

He continued: “It is the NPP that when former President John Mahama called that this election must be ideas and that we should come and debate our ideas and plans for Ghana, it is the NPP, led by Nana Akufo-Addo, who refused to, basically engage in intellectual discussions about the way forward for this country.

“It is the NPP who has created vigilante training camps across the country”, he added.

“And, so, when this Member of Parliament, without any evidence, comes here falsely, to say things about the NDC, first of all, I want you to basically disregard that useless statement that has been made, there’s no factual basis; in fact, the NDC is focused on a peaceful election, we are committed to basically taking our case to the people and we are happy that the people are responding.

“The people of Ghana are going to be the real judges and what this election is about is about four years of very incompetent leaders, it’s about four years of a government that has really engaged in massive corruption. You saw the report today from the Special Prosecutor. This is one more example of the many corruption scandals we’ve been dealing with”.
