“You are being lawless” for openly endorsing Eugene Arhin – Akufo-Addo told

Political Scientist, Professor Ransford Gyampo has accused President Akuffo–Addo of breaching the New Patriotic Party’s Code of Conduct by openly declaring support for his Director of Communication, Eugene Arhin.

Mr. Arhin had already announced his decision to contest the Awutu Senya West parliamentary primaries in 2024.

On Friday, September 2, President Akufo-Addo at a sod-cutting ceremony for the official commencement of construction of the Bawjiase-Kasoa road, and the commissioning of the APPEB Cylinder Manufacturing Co. Ltd openly declared his support for Mr. Arhin.

“It is public knowledge that he [Eugene Arhin] has intentions of contesting on the ticket of the NPP in 2024. If he is successful in the NPP Parliamentary primaries, Nananom I am confident that he will do an excellent job as MP for you and I appeal to all of you to support him if and when that time comes,” Akufo-Addo said.

Prof. Gyampo in a Facebook post on September 3 said the act by the President is an “unnecessary attempt at giving unfair advantage” to Eugene Arhin and makes him a “lawless” President.

“Respectfully, Mr President, I cannot mince words. I think you are being lawless, I am sorry to put it bluntly. You were part of your Party’s National Executive Committee Meeting that approved the Party’s Code of Conduct.

You are giving unfair advantage to Eugene Arhin, knowing very well that Parliamentary Primaries for the area hasn’t been held,” the post read.

The Political Scientist, therefore, wants the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua to summon the President before the NPP’s Complaint’s Committee.

“I expect Justine Frempong Kodua, the General Secretary of the Party to muster the testicular fortitude as a man who believes in fairness to summon you before your Party’s Complaint Committee. He did this to Hopeson Adorye and Assifua. No one is above the law and the application of the law must not be selective.

“Over to you, Justin. We knew John Boadu could not do this and that’s why we all worked behind the scenes towards your election,” he added.

Prof. Gyampo further urged Eugene Arhin to “openly and publicly come out to politely reject the campaign that was made for him by the President.”

Last month, the party’s National Steering Committee met all presidential hopefuls to court their support for compliance with the Party’s Code of Conduct.

The Committee also summoned the organisers of the pro-Alan Kyerematen health walk held on Saturday, August 13 despite attempts by the National Executives to get the organisers to call it off.

The health walk, which was massively attended by thousands of NPP faithful in the Ashanti Region, had the supporters displaying placards that highlighted their support for the Trade Minister as the next flagbearer to lead the party in the 2024 general elections.
