Qatar 2022: Including Gyan in Black Stars squad will be a dishonour to him

Former Communications Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah has said featuring former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan in the national team for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar will be a dishonour to the Ghanaian striker.

According to him, the former Black Stars Captain has been duly honoured for his role in the team by the state.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, 17 August 2022, the former Communications Minister said: “Asamoah Gyan has served our nation very well, he has received National honours and we thank him for his dedicated service.

“Let us not dishonour him by featuring him as a footballer in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The modern game has intricate dynamics with extraordinary energy and match fitness demands.”

He added: “Besides, his presence changes the entire dynamics in the Dede Ayew led Ghana Black Stars. Additionally, how many more players in the Asamoah Gyan category will be favourably considered or disappointed?”

Meanwhile, former Black Stars Winger Christian Atsu wants striker Gyan included in the squad for the mundial.

This comes on the back of a BBC interview with the former Black Stars Captain on, 16 August 2022, in which the striker expressed his willingness to take part in the World Cup one more time.

According to the former captain of the Black Stars, he is not officially retired.

Reacting to Gyan’s readiness to be included in the squad, Christian Atsu in a tweet said: “Honour Asamoah Gyan with his last wish.”

Gyan was part of the Black Stars team that played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cup.

He is Africa’s top scorer at the World Cup.
