Noise ban lifted as Homowo celebrations begin
The month-long ban on drumming and noise-making in the Ga State has officially been lifted, marking the commencement of this year’s Homowo Festival.
The prohibition, which began on May 6, 2024, was formally ended on Friday, June 6, 2024, following the successful performance of customary rites by the traditional authorities.
The Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, ceremoniously beat the Odadao twin drums at the Gbese Palace, accompanied by shouting and the firing of musketry, signaling the conclusion of the rites.
This traditional ceremony paves the way for the Homowo Festival, a significant event celebrated by the Ga people that symbolizes “hooting at hunger.”
The festival is traditionally preceded by a month-long ban on drumming and noise-making to ensure a period of peace and reflection.
The lifting of the ban was graced by several dignitaries, including the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Hon. Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo Constituency, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, Greater Accra Regional Minister, and Hon. Elizabeth Tawiah Sackey, Mayor of Accra, among others.
The Homowo Festival is a time of great cultural significance and communal celebration for the Ga people. It commemorates their ancestors’ triumph over famine and is marked by feasting, dancing, and other traditional activities. The lifting of the noise-making ban allows for the vibrant and spirited festivities to begin, bringing together the community in unity and joy.
