Black Stars Can Bring Home The AFCON Cup - Tema MCE
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Hon. Yohane Amarh Ashitey, has joined the side of faith in the conversation about the winsomeness of the current Black Stars team which is participating in the 2024 African Cup of Nations.
Departing from the popular belief that the team will not even make it past the preliminary stages, he emphatically states that he believes the team can win the ultimate prize, the cup.
“It is absolutely possible with this team, I believe that,” he said in an interview in Tema on Saturday morning.
According to him, what is required is a mindset of sacrifice and dedication from the players who will be in the national colours.
“If you look at our squad, they are nowhere inferior to players from the other participating countries. We have a mix of footballers who are plying professional careers abroad and those who are doing so locally, just like the other countries” he said.
Consequently Hon. Yohane Amarh Ashitey said the defeatist attitude among sections of the Ghanaian society about the winsomeness of the team is totally baseless and uncalled for as the country readies to start its campaign.
“We qualified to the AFCON just like all these other countries did, so what is the basis for the conclusion that we are not good enough?”
It has been 42 years since Ghana last won the continental diadem in football and for many Ghanaians, the wait has been dispiriting.
Ghana’s group also includes seven times champion, Egypt, and a very good Mozambican side.
Many believe that Ghana has very little chance of qualifying from the group stage because of the presence of Egypt and Mozambique in the group.
But Hon. Yohane Amarh Ashitey has dismissed such viewpoints pointing out that all the countries in the group with Ghana have been beaten by Ghana before.
“And if we have beaten Egypt and Mozambique and Cape Verde before, what shows that we cannot do it again?”
Meanwhile, the MCE has urged Ghanaians to stop being negative and rather convert their negativity into support for the Black Stars.
“Whether we like it or not this is our national team and we all have the opportunity to be patriotic this AFCON season,” the MCE said.
