Economic Jargons Help No One, What Youth Need Are Jobs - Mike Offei

Respected International Diplomat, Mr. Michael Offei, has underscored the futility of beautiful economic jargons which government appointees and state actors love to bandy about, saying that what is important is that government creates jobs.

In an interview with journalists in Tema, Mr. Mike Offei said the penchant for these duty bearers to throw about these jargons when many people are desperately jobless only serve to erode confidence in the language of economics and put people off.

“What you do when you bandy these technical words about, even as you are not creating jobs is that you are only deepening the already widespread view that African leaders are only well-read but know next to nothing practically,” Mr. Mike Offei said.

Rather than bandy impressive economic jargons about, he called for more concerted efforts at creating jobs.

The call comes in the build up to the 2024 elections which has been punctuated with the deployment of a lot of technical jargons by the government which has largely been perceived as having failed miserably to put the economy on a sound footing.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is likely to be the ruling New Patriotic Party NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 election is especially known to be a deployer of technical economic jargons especially when he is asked to explain his government’s performance.

“Words like Gross Domestic Product, Gross National product, inflation and what have you mean nothing to the young man or woman who is desperately looking for a job but can’t find one,” Mr. Mike Offei said.

The respected international diplomat who has worked with both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank points out that what people really need is a workable plan towards job creation that they can invest trust into.

To create more jobs, he urged the government to explore new and emerging avenues, especially in the digital world.

“I also think that flagship programs like Planting for food and jobs, one district one factory, and one village one dam, need to be given another critical look and review,” he said.

As for the Nation Builders Corp (NABCo) Mr. Mike Offei said it is just a cosmetic job creation move that does not present tangible solutions to the unemployment issue, urging that it be not be cited by government and its appointees as avenue for job creation.

“Government has a responsibility to solve national issues and arguably, the most pressing of these national issues is unemployment. It serves better purpose if we come up with creative ways of creating these jobs rather than bandy fanciful economic jargons around,” Mr. Mike Offei said.
