Niger coup – Chief of Staff finds refuge in Ghana
Djibo Dauoda, the Chief of Staff of Niger’s deposed President Mohammed Bazoum, is reportedly seeking refuge in Ghana.
He was spotted engaging with the media during a strategic meeting organized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra. Despite the military coup that ousted the government in Niger, Dauoda denied that the military had taken over and stated that the junta lacks recognition in the international community.
In response to the coup in Niger, ECOWAS has been discussing ways to restore constitutional order in the country. Military chiefs from ECOWAS member nations convened in Accra to strategize on potential interventions. ECOWAS commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah confirmed that most member states are prepared to contribute to a standby force that could potentially intervene in Niger to restore democracy.
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, emphasized the importance of democracy and peace in the region, stating that the focus of the meeting was to proactively promote stability and peace in Niger.
The situation in Niger underscores the regional efforts by ECOWAS to maintain democratic governance and stability in member countries, as outlined in their protocols and agreements.
