Opare Addo urges cessation of the 10% betting tax imposition
George Opare Addo, the National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced his opposition to the newly implemented 10 percent withholding tax on gross winnings from betting, gaming, lotto, and other games of chance.
The tax went into effect on August 15, 2023, following the passage of the Income Tax (Amendment) (No. 2) Act, 2023 (Act 1094).
In his remarks, Opare Addo criticized the tax, likening it to a tithe and humorously referencing President Akufo-Addo’s previous initiatives such as the construction of a cathedral. He expressed his skepticism about the tax by saying, “10%!! He’s no priest yet he wants ten percent of your earnings. What’s it with Akufo-Addo and playing priest; first, it’s a cathedral, now he wants tithes. Failed President!”
Opare Addo’s comments reflect the ongoing public discourse and political debates surrounding the implementation of this tax measure in Ghana. The introduction of this tax has sparked discussions about its potential impact on the gaming and betting industry, as well as its implications for tax revenue and government revenue mobilization.
