Bank of Ghana allocating $250 million for new headquarters – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) is constructing a new head office at an estimated cost of $250 million.

The NDC has accused the Bank of Ghana’s management of exhibiting gross mismanagement and recklessness over the years. According to Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson, these actions have strained Ghana’s economy, leading to a decline in the standard of living for Ghanaians.

Speaking during the NDC’s Moment of Truth series on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, the party claimed that the new central bank head office is being constructed in the Ridge area of Accra.

Ato Forson criticized the Bank of Ghana, accusing it of being lacking in sensitivity.

Consequently, the NDC is calling for the resignation of Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and his deputies due to their alleged role in the bank’s financial situation.

“Adding to our concerns is the Governor and his deputies’ decision to invest $250 million (GHC2.8 billion) in constructing another Head Office building, situated in the Ridge area. Given our current circumstances, this decision reflects a serious lack of sensitivity towards managing the finances of a country facing challenges,” Ato Forson stated.

The NDC has threatened to stage a march to the Bank of Ghana premises and demand the removal of the governor and his deputies from their positions if they don’t resign within a 21-day period.

The party has also accused the Bank of Ghana of engaging in unauthorized money printing, contributing to hyperinflation, and subsequently pushing a significant portion of Ghana’s population into poverty.

“The Bank of Ghana’s illicit money printing has led to the depletion of Ghana’s foreign reserves, which in turn caused an unprecedented depreciation of the Cedi, thereby being a key factor in the hyperinflation experienced in 2022.”
