Kenpong Academy banned after assaulting referee
The Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council has ordered a temporary ban on Kenpong Academy FC from playing their home games at Swedru Stadium, effective immediately.
The decision was made in response to terrible occurrences that transpired on April 17, 2023, during Matchday 23 against Kenpong FC and New Edubiase FC.
The center referee of the game, Godfred Kyegah ended the game abruptly after fans and players of the home team, Kenpong Academy physically assaulted him for awarding a second penalty to New Edubiase.
According to the GFA, the decision complies with Article 14(2) of the GFA Division One League Regulations, which says, among other things, “the GFA may order the closure of any league center where the safety of clubs, Match Officials or Spectators cannot be guaranteed.”
Before the referee decided to end the game, New Edubiase led 3-2.
Under the Division One League Regulations, the Competitions Department is expected to determine an alternative venue for the club’s subsequent home matches.
The culprits are however to expect another ruling from the Disciplinary Committee.
