A 28-year-old woman who gave birth to Siamese twins at the Ejura Government Hospital in the Ashanti region says she was terrified after seeing her babies.
Asmawu Abdallah underwent a caesarian section on Saturday night to be able to deliver the babies.
Speaking to journalist after delivering, Asmawu Abdallah said she was utterly shocked when she was informed about the condition of the babies, as earlier scans could not reveal their state.
“I have started feeding them because they are my children and gift from God,†she added.
The medical superintendent who carried out the C-section, Dr Mensah Manye, said the conjoined twins are very rare, noting that the case was the first of its kind to be recorded at the facility.
Conjoined twins are identical twins joined in utero. An extremely rare phenomenon, the occurrence is estimated to range from 1 in 49,000 births to 1 in 189,000 births, with a somewhat higher incidence in Southeast Asia and Africa.
