Mahama pocketed billions from terminal 3 project – Ken Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central has accused former President John Mahama of inflating the cost of the Terminal 3 project at the Kotoka International Airport.

According to the MP, the project which cost a whopping $278 million does not represent value for money.

“How much did Heathrow cost? How can one terminal cost $278 million? I deliberately went to count the hangars, just seven. $278 million, the things it can do at that airport is not what they did,” he stressed.

He accused the Mahama led-administration of being “greedy” adding that, the country could have achieved a lot with that amount of funds.

The Ghana Airports Company Ltd in March confirmed the completion of the terminal 3 project at the KIA.It is expected to provide more room for airlines and quick processing for passengers going through the airport.

The new terminal is expected to handle up to five million passengers a year which would be twice the capacity of the current terminal 2 at the KIA.

With the added on capacity, passengers could be processed faster, Airlines will have adequate space to provide better services for passengers and issues of congestion that used to mark the terminal 2 will be a thing of the past.

The Terminal 3 is a monumental feat of engineering.  It has five levels spread across 45,000 square meters and has parking space for 700 cars.

It has six contact stands for Code E aircraft and two remote stands. At the Departure level, it has 56 check-in desks, 30 passport control centres and eight security lanes.

At the Arrival level, it has 24 immigration counters, four e-gate positions [expandable to eight] and four reclaim devices. The terminal is equipped with a fully automated baggage handling system to handle both destination and transit luggage at 3,5OO bags an hour.
