Loftus-Cheek denies online rumours that he’s gay

Chelsea and England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has denied online rumours that he is gay.

Several Twitter users suggested that the 22-year-old – who has 10 caps for England and impressed at last summer’s World Cup – was set to come out as what would have been the most highest-profile professional footballer in England to reveal that he is homosexual posted online on Wednesday.

But those were just rumours, and Loftus-Cheek saw fit to respond to them in a tweet on Wednesday evening.

Tweeting to his 254,000 followers, he wrote: “Any player who came out as gay, they’d have my full support and respect. But the rumour isn’t true.”

Fans responded to the tweet by praising the way that Loftus-Cheek had handled the speculation about his private life.

The midfielder has played 17 times for Chelsea this season, scoring six goals including a hat-trick in a Europa League tie against BATE Borisov.

He impressed on loan at Crystal Palace last season, where his displays were enough to earn him a spot in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Loftus-Cheek made four appearances for England in Russia, playing the full 90 minutes in the group stage matches against Panama and Belgium.
