Ghana-Nigeria Clash: Majeed Ashimeru’s exclusion due to injury – GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has said six players called up for the Black Stars World Cup qualifier against Nigeria, including Anderlecht midfielder Majeed Ashimeru could not make it due to injury.

“Majeed Ashimeru, Antoine Semenyo, Baba Abdul Rahman, Samuel Owusu, Richmond Boakye Yiadom and Kamaldeen Sulemana were all handed call ups to the senior national team and were expected to report to camp on March 20, 2022, but failed to join the rest of the squad due to injuries at the respective club sides,” the GFA disclosed on its website.

According to the GFA, “Team Doctors of the respective clubs of the players wrote and officially inform the GFA of their injury situations and confirmed their unavailability for the double-header against Nigeria.”

The GFA continued that it will “continue to communicate with team doctors of the respective clubs and monitor the recovery of the players.”

However, the Anderlecht midfielder was seen in action for his team, full time on Sunday, 20 March 2022.

Former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan earlier condemned the exclusion of the Anderlecht midfielder in a tweet on Tuesday, 22 March 2022.

In his view, the Belgian player is the best midfielder in Ghana after Thomas Partey.

He later deleted his emotional tweet.

Twenty-four-year-old Ashimeru has been impressive in the Belgian top-flight since the beginning of the year.
