Mixed Start for Ghana’s U-17 and U-19 Teams at the 2025 IHF Challenge Trophy in Abidjan
Ghana’s U-17 and U-19 Women’s Handball Teams are currently in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, participating in the 2025 IHF Challenge Trophy – Africa Zone III, taking place from 20th to 24th April 2025.
Tough Start for U-17s Against Burkina Faso
The U-17 team had a difficult start, suffering a heavy defeat in their opening match against Burkina Faso. Ghana trailed 15-21 at halftime and couldn’t recover, eventually losing 41-27.
Head Coach Raphael Sifah remains optimistic despite the result.
“It’s a developmental tournament, and I believe with time, these players will settle in and adapt to the game,” he said. The U-17s will look to bounce back in their next fixture against Togo.
U-19s Shine Under the Lights with a Strong Win
The U-19 team delivered a better performance, playing their opening match under the floodlights of Palais des Sports Treichville against the Central African Republic.
After a shaky start—conceding three quick goals before scoring in the 5th minute—Ghana settled into the game, ending the first half with a hard-fought 8-8 draw.
In the second half, Ghana stepped up with sharper tactics, attacking through the centre and defending around the 9-meter line, eventually securing a solid 23-16 victory.
Head Coach Raphael Sifah noted there’s still room for growth: “We’ll work on our shortcomings from this game and improve our strategies moving forward.”
Ghana’s U-19s will next face Burkina Faso.
Mary Akaasa was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match for her outstanding performance.
