Retired Diplomat Mike Offei Praises President Mahama and Attorney General
Retired International Diplomat, Mr. Michael Yaw Offei has praised President John Dramani Mahama for the decisions he has taken so far.
In an interview, he said the president’s decision to actualize Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) and dispatch of food to senior high schools were bold and decisive.
“Leadership is about taking bold decisions like these and from what we have seen so far, we have cause to be hopeful that this leader will govern the country decisively,’’ Mr. Mike Offei said.
According to him, the president’s quick handing-over of the ORAL investigation reports to the Attorney General for investigation and prosecution also warms the heart.
“His Excellency the President has shown to the whole world that in this process of pursuing accountability, he is not going to be a witch-hunter but one that will allow the institutions of state to operate in due process.
“So far, if you ask me, I would say that the president is living up to the admonishment of former United States President, Barack Obama, that the better statecraft is building strong institutions of state and allowing them the free hand to work, rather than magnifying strongmen.”
Mr. Mike Offei is also a respected Economist who has worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
He praised President Mahama for his quick engagement with the IMF over the country’s extended credit facility program saying the fast engagement creates an opportunity to really co-plan the economic resetting agenda with one of Ghana’s most important bilateral partners.
He said President Mahama’s quick set-up of a team to plan a national economic dialogue is also very uplifting.
Mr Offei added that President Mahama has demonstrated that he really knows what the most pressing needs of the country are.
Meanwhile, the respected economist has also praised the Attorney General for obliging to public demand to give explanation for his decision to discontinue some court cases that were inherited from the previous government.
Commenting on the discontinuation of the Opuni, Ato Forson and FixTheCountry cases, he said that the Attorney General was not under any requirement to explain his decision to file nolle prosequi, per law but that it was very respectful of the learned Law Lecturer, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, to honour the wishes of Ghanaian citizens.
“We all knew that the decision to file nolle prosequi in a number of cases was the prerogative of the AG and he was not under any requirement to do so, it is therefore heartwarming that he minded to explain things to us,” Mr Offei asserted.
In respect of the Ato Forson case for instance, Dominic Ayine has explained that the case was politically motivated and was therefore not wholesome for his outfit to pursue.
Meanwhile, for many citizens, the most obvious vindication for the AG is that the Akufo-Addo government, after eight whole years of prosecution, failed to secure convictions.
