Poor show by Ghana Handball at African Games
The Male and the Female handball teams of Ghana finished 6th and 7th in the 13th African Games 2023 held at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.
The female handball team were in Group A alongside Angola, Algeria, and Burkina Faso.
Ghana lost its opening game against Algeria by 14-22 and were humbled in their second game against African's Women Handball powerhouse Angola by 13-35.
In the last group game against Burkina Faso, team Ghana registered their first victory by 22-21 and secured 2 points.
They, however, settled for a placement match as the 2 points could not qualify them to the next round.
Out of the 8 teams that participated in the female category, Ghana placed 6th after a keenly contested game against Uganda, which ended 28-30.
In Group B, the Men's team battled Kenya, DR Congo, and Benin but could not survive the group stage as they lost all their matches.
Their opening game against Kenya ended 22-27; a game that was dominated by the Kenyans.
Ghana played the second match against DR Congo and could not survive the pace and the technique their opponent brought into the game.
They lost the match woefully by 12 goals margin of 33-21.
Their third encounter in the tournament was against neighbors Benin.
Team Benin thrashed Ghana by 29-24.
Ghana ended the group matches without a point.
Team Ghana played a placement game against Togo and had a consolation victory with a 34-27 scoreline.
Team Ghana settled for the 7th position out of the 8 countries that participated in the tournament.
Four players in the current squad Bernard Amanor, Enock Quao, Eric Amin and Rose Adjavor were part of the team that participated in the last edition of the African Games in Morocco 2019.
