‘The Lord makes the crooked straight’ – Otabil’s 1st post after jailing of crony Ato Essien
Mensa Otabil, a renowned Christian preacher and the founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) has made a first Social media post after news of the jailing of protegé Ato Essien.
News emerged that Essien, the former CEO of Capital bank has been jailed for 15 years by the Accra High Court after he was convicted on the charges of stealing over GH¢90m belonging to the bank, through Capital Bank.
Otabil was the board chairman of Capital Bank, a Ghanaian bank that collapsed in 2017. The collapse of Capital Bank was part of a larger banking crisis in Ghana that led to the collapse of several other banks.
Hours after the news of the jailing went viral, Otabil posted on X:
“The Lord goes before us and makes the crooked path straight. #CrossoverWithOtabil is 80 Days away”.
Otabil has been earlier been sued by the receivers of Capital Bank for his alleged role in the collapse of the bank. The receivers allege that Otabil and other directors of the bank engaged in mismanagement and insider lending, which contributed to the bank’s collapse.
Otabil has denied these allegations, saying that he played a non-executive role in the bank’s management and was not involved in the day-to-day operations. He has also said that he never took any loans from the bank.
The case against Otabil is still ongoing, and it is unclear how it will be resolved.
However, the case has raised important questions about the corporate governance of banks in Ghana and the role of directors in preventing bank failures.
In addition to the civil lawsuit, Otabil is also facing a possible criminal investigation by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO). The EOCO is investigating allegations that Otabil and other directors of Capital Bank engaged in money laundering.
