Asuboi accident sad waste of young lives – Mahama mourns

Former President John Dramani Mahama has advised drivers of intercity coaches and other public transport vehicles to exercise a little more caution with the lives of citizens entrusted to their care.

Mr Mahama said this to commiserate with the families and friends and some nine persons who lost their lives in a Sunday dawn road accident that occurred at Asuboi.

Some of the victims are alleged to be students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

“What a sad waste of young lives in the Asuboi accident! My condolences to the families of the dead, and speedy recovery to the injured,” Mr Mahama noted in a statement.

The victims were travelling on a Hyundai Universe commercial bus with registration number AK 324-22 to Accra from Sunyani when the vehicle head-on collided with a faulty articulated truck parked off the road at Asuboi on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The truck was carrying a forty-footer freight loaded with lumber.

Preliminary findings of the police suggest the bus driver was sleeping behind the wheel and also failed to observe traffic rules.

Other passengers who survived have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.
