Akufo-Addo’s comment on Aisha Huang a mockery of security agencies – Ishmael Norman

Security Analyst, Dr. Ishmael Norman says President Akufo-Addo’s comment on Aisha Huang’s departure from Ghana in 2018 is a “mockery” of the national security architecture.

President Akufo-Addo in an interview on a Ho-based radio station on Monday, as part of his tour of the Volta Region, said he is not sure about the circumstances under which Aisha Huang departed from the country.

“I’m not still sure whether she was in fact deported. Or whether she fled the country the first time and has now come back. There still seems to be some uncertainty about it.

“But whichever way it is, she’s become the sort of nickname for all that galamsey represents”, the President said.

Reacting to the President’s statement, Dr. Norman noted that it is an indication of unpreparedness by the national security for any existential threat.

“It tells you that national security is wack in terms of preparedness against potential threat at our borders and as security people, we need to impress upon the President that we need to know more, because to tell you the truth, they are making a mockery of the Ghana Army, the Police, the Immigration, of Customs and all the security agencies because of what the President just said today. No control system is in place so people can come and go when they want,” he said on Top Story, Tuesday.

Dr. Norman believes that the President has no knowledge of Aisha Huang’s exit from Ghana and could not have forgotten about the details if he was indeed briefed.

“It is impossible for him [Akufo-Addo] to have forgotten because this is an issue we have been discussing up and down for two weeks now, so for him to have not gotten the details right means he is not in control.”

According to the Security Analyst, the government is plausibly denying the facts.

“He [Akufo-Addo] did that deliberately to possibly spoil the play so that there will be plausible denial at some point. I think something like that is going on. It is possible that Aisha Huang did not continue the journey from Addis Ababa,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo’s comment has been met with severe criticism from the general public and many have since questioned his efforts towards the fight against ‘galamsey’.
