2022 World Cup: Lower your expectations of Black Stars – Asamoah Gyan to Ghanaians

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has asked Ghanaians to lower their expectation of the team’s performance in the 2022 World Cup games.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, the country’s leading goal scorer explained that this is because the players may not be “ready enough for the games.”

He added that instead of putting pressure on the players in the upcoming football showpiece in Qatar, Ghanaians should focus on building the national team ahead of the games.

“We should give them time to make sure they get there. When you put pressure on them it’s very very difficult. You know a player going to replace Messi at Barcelona, its pressure so the fans have to just calm down,” he said.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place between November and December this year in Qatar.

The country’s all-time top-scorer also claimed that Ghana’s qualification for the 2022 World Cup resulted from fate and fortune.

According to him, Nigeria’s Super Eagles, against whom the Black Stars played in the friendly game, were a better side than the Black Stars to have qualified for the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he is available to play for the senior national team, especially as they prepare to participate in the World Cup.

The former Sunderland striker explained that he has not retired from football or the national team, stating that he would be ready at any time to join the playing squad for competitive games.

He, however, stressed that he must first be fit before he can honour any invitation to play for the Black Stars.

He noted that although he is good in terms of talent and other things, “I have to be ready.”

“I’m available. So far as I haven’t retired from football or I haven’t retired from the national team, I will be available at any time but unless I’m fit [to play]. If I am not fit, there is no way I can go on the field; I will be deceiving myself [and] I will be deceiving people.

So, I always say even to play competitive football; I have to be ready to be on the pitch, not because I am Asamoah Gyan or people know what I can do, so I will go and stand there and be doing nothing. I need to be fit – that’s the most important thing,” he said.
